USC Fertility doctors explain the types of PGT that we can offer to our patients

As reproductive technology has advanced, the team at our Los Angeles fertility clinic has stayed well-informed on the latest developments. Doing so means we can provide state-of-the-art treatment for our patients, allowing them to become parents. One of the tools we use is embryo genetic testing, also known as preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). The various types of PGT add insight that allows our physicians to increase the odds of bringing home a healthy baby.

Understanding your options: A brief overview of the types of PGT

In many cases, patients have no idea that they carry defective genes. With embryo genetic testing, our doctors can assess the quality and health of each embryo before the actual transfer. Our team utilizes the following types of PGT at USC Fertility.

PGT-A: Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy. Often recommended for patients with unexplained infertility, unsuccessful IVF cycles, recurrent miscarriage and advanced reproductive age, PGT-A screens the embryos for extra or missing chromosomes. It allows our team to select the best-quality embryo for the transfer.

PGT-SR: Preimplantation genetic testing for chromosomal structural rearrangements. For patients with an identified chromosomal translocation in their family history, our doctors may suggest PGT-SR. This type of embryo genetic testing can also help in cases of recurrent pregnancy loss.

PGT-M: Preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic/single-gene defects. With PGT-M, another one of the types of PGT, we can look for inherited conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease and Huntington’s disease. More complicated than PGT-A or PGT-SR, we only use PGT-M for patients with a known risk of having a child with a genetic disease.
