When the Los Angeles Frontrunners began planning the 34th annual race this June, Dr. Karine Chung was one of the first sponsors that signed on for support. The USC Fertility reproductive endocrinologist has helped hundreds of singles and couples build their families in the 10 years that she has served the Los Angeles fertility community. When she’s not caring for patients or teaching at the Keck School of Medicine, she enjoys working on her PR (personal record!).

On the leading edge

Fertility specialist Dr. Karine Chung finished first overall among female runners at the 2015 Pride Run. “I participate in the Pride Run almost every year,” says Dr. Chung. “It’s in my neighborhood and I have been a supporter of gay pride events over the years, so it was always on my calendar.”

Growing support for LGBT fertility options

The fertility specialist says that USC Fertility takes care of a growing number of gay and lesbian patients, and it occurred to her and fellow physicians that the practice should sponsor the annual race.

“The Pride Run event organizers were very enthusiastic and grateful,” she said. “In fact, the day of the race I learned that USC Fertility was the only sponsor that reached out to Pride Run first, instead of the other way around.”

Raising awareness for LGBT fertility treatments and family building options is important to USC Fertility, and Dr. Chung says that next year the team hopes to be out in full force during #pridemonth.

Finishing strong during #pridemonth

FullSizeRenderOne of the highlights of the Pride Run was at the finish line, says Dr. Chung. She was waiting for her friends to cross, and met two young runners next to her.

“I had seen these energetic and inspiring kids, a 13-year-old girl and her little brother, cross the finish line together and I gave them a high five as we stood next to each other cheering on the other runners.  After a few moments, they both started shouting ‘Go Mommies!’

That’s the moment when it all came together for Dr. Chung. “How cool to see the finish line for our efforts with LGBT fertility options and our ultimate prize—helping families grow.”

Dr. Chung is the director of USC’s Fertility Preservation and Egg Freezing Program and a fertility specialist dedicated to compassionate and comprehensive care. Contact our Los Angeles fertility center to connect with our experienced team.
